Iron oxides
Other names: Iron oxides, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499, CI 77489, CI 77510
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Iron oxides, also known as CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499, CI 77489, CI 77510, are chemicals used in a wide range of products. They are inorganic pigments derived mainly from rocks and minerals. Their colour varies according to structural variations and the amount of iron present - the very name of these substances can thus refer to a range of colours from red to black. These substances are resistant to light, temperature and moisture and are therefore popular in industry for their durability and stability.
The uses of iron oxides are truly diverse. They are most commonly encountered in cosmetics and skin care. CI 77491, CI 77492 and CI 77499 are found in many products such as lipsticks, powders, eye shadows, mascara, but also hair care products and sunscreens. Iron oxides are also used in the food industry as colouring agents, especially in confectionery, beverages or pasta, where they give products an attractive appearance. Iron oxides are also often used in industry for the production of glass, ceramics, porcelain and other building materials or as corrosion protection. Some iron oxides, such as CI 77499, are also used in medicine for magnetic resonance imaging or as contrast agents.
