Harpagophytum procumbens, also known as Harpagophytum prostrate, Harpagophytum radix, Devil's claw or Devil's claw, is a plant belonging to the family Pedaliaceae. It grows mainly in southwest Africa - in Namibia, South Africa and Botswana. It is in these areas that this medicinal plant is considered a traditional medicine, which is an essential part of local medicine. It is mainly used for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
The main substances contained in Harpagophytum procumbens are harpagosides - mustard glycosides that are responsible for the plant's effects. Devil's claw roots in particular are used in some products for their anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory effects. They often appear in natural creams and ointments for the treatment of muscle and joint pain. They are also used as a medicinal ingredient in teas, which are often recommended for digestive problems and in the treatment of rheumatism. Harpagophytum also appears in the form of dietary supplements, which are popular with athletes and the elderly for their ability to relieve pain and swelling. Due to its effectiveness, the WHO (World Health Organization) lists it as an officially recognized medicinal plant.
