Gypsum, otherwise known as Shi gao, gypsum or stone paste, is a common and versatile raw material used in many industries. This mineral, which is white or colourless in its pure form, is the third most abundant on the planet. Its characteristic feature is its softness, which makes it easy to process and shape. Gypsum is mined in many countries around the world, including the Czech Republic, which has some of the largest deposits in Europe.
Its main use is in the construction industry, where gypsum is used to make plaster, gypsum plasterboard, plaster, adhesives, mortar mixes and other building and insulation materials. It is also used in the ceramic industry for the production of ceramic glazes and is an important raw material in the cement industry. Gypsum is also used in agriculture as a soil amendment to improve soil structure and its ability to retain water. In pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, it is a component of some ointments, powders and other preparations. It is no exaggeration to say that gypsum is one of the most exploited minerals of our time.
