Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)

Glyceryl Palmitate, also known as Glyceryl monopalmitate, Hexadecanoic acid, 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester, or Hexadecanoic acid, monoester with 1,2,3-propanetriol, is a chemical compound that is often used in cosmetics and food processing. It is a colourless to slightly yellowish solid that has a high melting point and is practically insoluble in water. Glyceryl Palmitate is an ester of palmitic acid and glycerol, and thus forms one of the building blocks of fats in most plants and animals.

In cosmetics, Glyceryl Palmitate is used for its emulsifying and emollient properties. It is commonly found in moisturizing creams, face washes, body lotions, shampoos, shower gels and perfumes. It improves the consistency of products and gives them a silky smoothness. It also improves the distribution of other ingredients in skin products. In the food industry, Glyceryl Palmitate is used as an emulsifier and stabilizer. It is therefore found in various baked goods, confectionery, chocolate, semi-finished products, dairy products, as well as in instant soups and sauces. Although this substance is naturally present in food, in some cases it can cause undesirable side effects such as skin and eye irritation.
