Gentianella amarella (Gentianella amarella)
Other names: Gentian bitter
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The bitter gentian, scientifically called Gentianella Amarella, is a species of herb in the gentian family. This plant is characterised by its blue, sometimes even purple flowers, which are spread in clusters at the top. It grows mainly in wet meadows, peat bogs or mountain pastures. It is an annual to biennial plant that usually grows to a height of 10 to 40 cm. The bitter gentian is known for its specific bitter taste, which is a result of the bitterness and alkaloid content of the plant.
Although the bitter gentian may be unpleasant to some because of its bitterness, others find the plant particularly valuable for its medicinal properties. Its bitter substances help stimulate the appetite and aid digestion. Therefore, bitter gentian is often used in traditional medicine as a natural remedy for indigestion, lack of appetite or stomach problems. Various products are made from the plant, especially tinctures and teas, but one can also find liqueurs or syrups containing gentian extracts. In the modern cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry, gentian is also used to produce creams and ointments that promote skin regeneration. However, all of these products must be consumed in moderation, as bitter gentian and its derivatives can cause side effects such as nausea or dizziness if taken in excess.
