Gastrodia erecta, also known as Tian Ma, is a valuable medicinal plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is native to Asia, especially Japan, Korea and China. It is a parasitic plant that grows on the roots of other trees. Its stem can reach up to 50 centimetres in height and it flowers from May to June. Gastrodia erecta is protected in both Korea and China, where wild specimens are not allowed to be collected.
The main active ingredient found in gastrodia is glycosides. Thanks to them, this plant is mainly used to treat neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, migraines or epilepsy. In addition, gastrodia also has anti-inflammatory effects and promotes heart health. However, it is not only used in medicine. In Asia, gastrodia is also used to make tea, which is popular for its relaxing and calming effects. In Japan, gastrodia is used as an ingredient in certain types of sauces or soups. The possibility of using gastrodia in cosmetic products is also currently being tested in China for its positive effects on the skin.
