Fucus serratus (Fucus serratus)
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The saw kelp, also known as Fucus vesiculosus, bubble kelp, bladder kelp, or kelp, is a species of seaweed found in cold and temperate seas around the world. It is one of many species of seaweed characterized by irregularly branched stems with inflated bladders filled with air. The bladders allow the algae to stick close to the surface of the water and better absorb the sunlight needed for photosynthesis.
Because of its mineral content, such as iodine, potassium, calcium, magnesium and zinc, the sawgrass is used in many areas. In the nutritional industry, for example, it is used to make dietary supplements to support the thyroid gland and overall bodily functions. In the cosmetics industry, its extracts are used in skin and hair care products. It is known for its moisturizing and nourishing properties, which is why it is included in many creams, masks, shampoos and conditioners. In agriculture, saw palmetto is used as a fertilizer to strengthen the soil due to its rich mineral content. Because it also has the ability to absorb toxic metals, it is also being investigated for possible use in the bioremediation of poisoned waters or soils.
