Frogweed, also known by the names ze xie, water plantain or gall, is a group of plants belonging to the family Frogaceae. Its most common representative in the Czech Republic is the swamp frogwort, which grows on the edges of ponds, lakes, in swamps or marshes. Its occurrence can also be observed in various parts of the world where a favourably humid climate prevails.
The frogweed is especially known for its medicinal properties. In traditional Chinese medicine, its tubers are used in the treatment of various ailments such as diabetes, high blood pressure, as well as problems with the urinary system. Due to its detoxifying properties, the frogweed is also used in the form of teas to cleanse the body. Its parts are also popular in cosmetics, where it is used to moisturize and regenerate the skin. However, despite its benefits, it is important to observe the correct dosage and consult a doctor for use, as excessive use can cause unwanted side effects.
