Ferulic Acid

Ferulic acid, also known as ferulic acid or 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid, is a substance widely distributed in nature, specifically in plants. This potent antioxidant component is of great use and its benefits are appreciated in various fields. Ferulic acid is a component of plant cell walls, where it helps protect plants from the harmful effects of UV radiation. This radiation could otherwise lead to DNA damage and slow down growth or even kill plants.

In cosmetics, ferulic acid is a common and important ingredient, mainly due to its antioxidant properties. It is a component of skin serums, creams and body lotions, where it helps to fight free radicals and thus the premature ageing of the skin. Ferulic acid is often combined with other vitamins, such as vitamin C and E, to significantly increase the antioxidant effect. In the food industry, this acid is used as an additive to increase the shelf life of foods. As it can neutralise free radicals, it prevents processes leading to rancidity and spoilage of food. Ferulic acid is also found in some dietary supplements.
