Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The ferruginous skumpa (Rhus verniciflua), sometimes also referred to as the lacunary skumpa or by the Latin names Toxicodendron verniciflua or Toxicodendron vernicifluum, is a tree native to Asia, specifically to the region of Korea, China and Japan. This fruit tree is known for its arching crown and dark green leaves, which change to a colourful range of red and orange tones in autumn. The tiny yellow flowers are an important source of nectar for bees but can be allergenic to humans.
Fermented bees are often used in industry. Its resin is used as a raw material for the production of varnish, which is resistant to water, chemicals and mechanical damage. Traditionally, this japan is used, for example, in the manufacture of traditional Japanese instruments, fine furniture and even musical instruments. The resin also contains components with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, useful in medicine. Nevertheless, this tree must be handled with care as it can cause allergic reactions.
