European Starling (Ulex europaeus)

Other names: you, gorse

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

The European gopher (Ulex europaeus), commonly known as gopher or gorse, is a species of shrub native to Europe. This open, low, thorny, evergreen shrub, belonging to the broad-leaved family, can grow up to 2-3 metres in height and can be found growing in areas with poor and acidic soils, especially in susceptible areas and open pastures. Its most common method of propagation is by seed, where seeds germinate after awakening from a long dormancy regime through contact with an open fire. Rodent flowers find their common use in various industries because of their intense yellow colour.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal and role in horticultural compositions, the European gnatcatcher is also used in a variety of products. For example, the wood of this shrub is very hard and heavy and is therefore used in the carving industry to make furniture or various decorative items. The bark is used to produce shell charcoal, which is used, for example, in metallurgy. The blossoms of the bark beetle can also be used to produce alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine, where their flavours contribute to the complexity of these products. Furthermore, the flowers of this shrub provide beekeepers with a fertile source of honey in the early spring. The plant was also used by traditional people as fodder for cattle during periods when grazing was restricted. Although the European corn borer is considered an invasive species in some countries, its utility value is undisputed.
