Ethoxydiglycol

Other names: Diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethanol

Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)

Ethoxydiglycol, among other names such as Diethylene glycol monomethyl ether or 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethanol, is an organic compound used mainly in the manufacture of cosmetic products. It is a colourless liquid with an ether-like odour that is slightly viscous. Ethoxydiglycol is popular for its dissolving properties, allowing better distribution of active ingredients in cosmetic products and ensuring that products are stable and uniform. It is well tolerated and does not cause skin irritation, making it ideal for use in products designed for sensitive skin.

It can be found in a range of cosmetic products such as make-up, make-up removers, facial toners, creams and lotions, shampoos, sunscreens, as well as antiperspirants. Ethoxydiglycol is also used in many pharmaceutical products such as ointments and gels. This is because it not only aids in the better distribution of medicinal substances, but is also able to improve their penetration into the skin. This makes ethoxydiglycol a very useful ingredient in transdermal therapeutic systems.

In rare cases, ethoxydiglycol is also used as a component of printing ink, in some industrial cleaning agents, or as a solvent in the manufacture of paints and coatings. It is therefore a very important chemical with a wide range of uses in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and industrial industries.
