Black crowberry (Empetrum nigrum), also known as Crowberry, Black crowberry or Empetrum medium, is a species of plant in the crowberry family. It is an evergreen plant that grows as a low shrub, usually reaching a height of 15 to 45 cm. It is mainly native to the cooler regions of the northern hemisphere, both in Europe and in North America and Asia. There is also a subspecies called Siberian shikha (E. sibiricum), which is found mainly in northern and eastern parts of Asia.
The black shicha produces small purple-black fruits that are very popular in folk medicine and are also used in gastronomy. In folk medicine, they are used to prepare various syrups, teas and tinctures, which are mainly used to treat diarrhoeal diseases, stomach disorders and to strengthen the immune system. In the kitchen, they can be used to make various jams, jellies, juices, wines, liqueurs and delicious pastries. In some areas, this type of plant is also used for the production of dyes.
