Elm (Ulmus)

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

The elm, also known as the sycamore or hemlock, is a tree that belongs to the Ulmus genus and the willow family. This tree is mainly distributed in the temperate northern hemisphere, where it is found in various forms, from small shrubs to large trees. The best known species are the elm, mountain elm, European elm and small-leaved elm. The characteristic feature of the elm is its appearance - it has rough bark and large, dark green leaves with irregularly toothed edges. The male flowers are reddish or light green, while the female flowers are light green.

Elm wood is one of the very strong and durable trees, being heavy and tough, with high resistance to abrasion and walking. Due to these properties, it is used in many areas. In particular, it is used to make furniture, wooden flooring, plywood, garden tools and toys. Elm wood is also popular for bow making as it is flexible and resistant to breakage. Historically, it was also used in shipbuilding. In addition, elm wood is often used in the construction industry, for example in reinforcing structures or making doors and windows. When properly processed, it is able to withstand harsh conditions, both outside and inside a building. Elm wood is also used to make musical instruments, especially guitars and drums, which get their specific tone and response from it.
