Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate
Other names: 4-dodecoxy-4-oxo-3-sulfonate-butanoate, DLS
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, also known as 4-dodecoxy-4-oxo-3-sulfonate-butanoate or DLS, is an ingredient that is used quite extensively in the current cosmetic industry. It is a foaming substance whose role can be likened to that of soap, i.e. it serves to remove impurities and oils from the surface of the skin and hair. However, DLS is much gentler than regular soap as it does not remove the natural sebum of the skin. It is therefore preferable to use products containing this ingredient.
DLS is used in a large number of cosmetic products. It is typically found in shampoo, body or facial shower gel, but also in acne products, bubble baths, shaving products and baby soaps, where its gentleness ensures that it does not irritate sensitive baby skin. It also has the advantage of a neutral pH so that it does not promote the formation of bacteria and is therefore safe for use on mucous membranes. DLS can therefore be described as a highly versatile and above all safe substance that has a firm place in the cosmetics industry.
