Dextran, also known as decyl cocoate or TEGOSOFT DC, is an organic compound extracted from sugar by plant bacteria. It has been used in industry for more than 60 years due to its specific properties, being safe for humans and environmentally friendly.
This chemical component is used as a moisturizing and emollient ingredient in cosmetic products. Dextran is also a component of many skin and hair care products, as it acts as an anti-static agent and emulsifier, making products firmer and less greasy. It is also used in body lotions, creams, shampoos, conditioners and make-up. In medicine, this polysaccharide is used as a plasma substitute as it has the ability to dissolve water insoluble substances. Dextran is also used in the food industry as a stabilizer, thickener and emulsifier. Its other applications are in biotechnology and in the production of certain types of paper.
