Decyl glucoside
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Decyl glucoside, also known as decyl cocoate or TEGOSOFT DC, is a non-ionic surfactant used in a wide range of products. These substances are formed by esterifying vegetable oils or fats with carbohydrates such as glucose or fructose. Decyl glucoside has many advantages, among which are its mild but effective cleaning effect and good properties such as emulsification and moisturizing. This biodegradable cleansing agent is also suitable for sensitive and irritated skin.
Decyl glucoside is most commonly found in cosmetic and cleansing products. In cosmetics such as shampoos, shower gels, facial cleansers, its main function is to remove impurities and oils from the skin and hair. Although its foaming ability is lower than that of sulphates, its foam is softer and silkier. In cleaning products such as dishwashing detergents and washing machine powders, it removes grease and other impurities. Because of its gentle properties, decyl glucoside is often used in products for children or people with sensitive skin. As it is a plant-derived ingredient, it is also often used in natural and organic cosmetics.
