Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The evergreen cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), also known as the true cypress, Italian cypress, evergreen cypress or cypress nut, is a tree typical of the Mediterranean landscape, especially Italy and Greece. This tree is extremely hardy, can withstand very harsh conditions and adapts well to different soil types. It is popular for its appearance as it forms very narrow and tall 'columns'. Its height often reaches up to 30 metres and the needles form a dense green cover, making it an ideal plant for hedging.
Cypress evergreen is used in a number of products. Its wood is valued for its durability and strength, so it is often used in the construction industry, for example for furniture or outdoor wood panelling. The wood also has aromatic properties and is therefore popular in aromatherapy. Cypress oil, extracted from the leaves and branches of the tree, is used in perfumery and cosmetics for its fresh and clean scent. Cypress nuts, otherwise known as pine cones, can be used as decoration or in handicrafts. It should be mentioned that the evergreen cypress also has medicinal properties. It is known for its antibacterial and antiviral properties, and folk medicine uses it to treat various ailments such as colds and flu.
