Cynomorium strange (Cynomorium coccineum)
Other names: Maltese fungus, fungus maletensis, red tuber fungus
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Cynomorium coccineum (Cynomorium coccineum) is one of the most unusual plant species, whose nature and form evokes the first touches of mystery. Commonly referred to as Malta fungus, fungus maletensis or red tuber. This rare plant is considered parasitic because it grows on the roots of other plants. As such, it lacks chlorophyll and as a result has a characteristic dark red colour. The plant is found in the steppes and semi-deserts of the Mediterranean, where temperatures reach extremes and water is scarce.
Red tuber is valued in folk medicine for its medicinal properties, especially in Asian countries. In traditional Chinese medicine, for example, cynomorium is used as a tonic for the kidneys and liver, but also as an aphrodisiac. In addition, it is reported to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Cynomorium strange is also used in some herbal teas and dietary supplements. Despite these claims, it must be stressed that modern science has not yet confirmed all of the potential health benefits of cynomorium strange. Its use should therefore be consulted with a specialist and should not be considered as a substitute for conventional treatment.
