Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Croton tiglium, sometimes also known as ladel, Indian piñon, granatilla, grana tiglii, semina crotonis, grana molucca, is a striking plant native to tropical areas of Southeast Asia, mainly India, Malaysia and Indonesia. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, which is very diverse and includes more than 7,400 species of plants, including croton.
The crotons are unmistakable with their multi-coloured leaves and evergreen shoots. But just as striking as its appearance are its effects. In fact, the seeds of the crotone are a very powerful laxative. The substance behind this laxative effect is called croton oil (oleum crotonis). This oil is used in medicine to induce diarrhoea quickly and effectively. However, it must be taken in very small doses, because at higher doses it can cause a severe gastrointestinal reaction including diarrhea with blood, vomiting and even shock. Croton oil is also used in homeopathy as a remedy for various digestive tract ailments. In addition to this, there has been use in natural medicines for the treatment of skin diseases and soap making. However, the use of croton oil should always be consulted with a specialist as it is a very potent substance that can cause serious health problems.
