Cranberry cranberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.)

Cranberry or Vaccinium vitis-idae L., also known under the English name Lingonberry, is a well-known berry shrub in the Czech nature, which can be found mainly in forest clearings, spruce forests or peat bogs. This plant is found mainly in the colder regions of the northern hemisphere such as the Nordic countries, Russia, Canada, but also in the Czech Republic. It is an evergreen, creeping shrub that grows to a height of 10-40 cm. In autumn it produces characteristic dark red berries about 1 cm in size, which are popular for their specific, slightly bitter taste.

Cranberries are used in the food industry, where they are used to make not only traditional jams and marmalades, but also syrups, juices, sauces and, last but not least, rare alcoholic products such as cranberry liqueur. Thanks to their high vitamin C and mineral content, cranberries are a great addition to the diet during the winter months. In the kitchen, they are an excellent accompaniment to wild meats: deer, wild boar, rabbit, but also poultry such as duck. They are also appreciated by vegans and vegetarians, for whom cranberries are a great source of iron. The berries, especially in the form of juice, are also used in folk medicine for their healing effects, for example in the treatment of the urinary tract. Last but not least, the cranberry is also used in the cosmetics industry - its extracts can be found in skin creams, masks, tonics, but also in lip balms. The cranberry is therefore a truly versatile plant whose uses range from the kitchen to medicine.
