Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Copaiva, also known as Coppaiba, Copaifera, Corax or Diesel tree, is a tree native to the Amazon whose resin has an effect on the human body as a natural antibiotic. This tree grows up to 30 metres tall and its leaves are long and stiff. The bark and trunk of the tree are used to extract 'copaiva oil', which is used for its medicinal properties and is rich in essential fatty acids and terpenes.
Copaiva oil is used in the pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics, but also in aromatherapy and food processing. In medicine, it is used for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antibacterial effects. This makes it ideal for treating various skin conditions such as acne, eczema or psoriasis, but it also helps with respiratory problems and muscle aches. In the cosmetic industry, it is part of many skin and body care products, but also hair care. Its strong but pleasant scent also ensures its popular use in aromatherapy. As a food additive, it is again used to improve the taste and aroma of some products.
