Industrial salt is mostly used in the chemical industry, where it is involved in the production of various products, especially chlorine, caustic soda and various types of plastics. As a winter grit, it is used to remove ice and snow on roads and pavements. In the food industry, table salt has an indispensable place as a preservative, humectant, stabiliser and flavour enhancer. Furthermore, sodium chloride is also used in the cosmetics industry, for example in many types of soaps, shampoos and body scrubs. It is also used in medicine, as it is the basis for the production of infusion solutions and medicines. It is also used in the tanning and textile industries because of its absorbent properties.
