Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The slanting rust, also known as the Siberian chaga, chaga, or slanting rust, is a fungus found primarily on birch trees. This parasitic species develops on trees damaged by lightning strikes or on old birch trees. The brown to black fruit of the fungus, with an entire, uneven and more or less distinctly mottled skin, is characteristic of this species of fungus. Chaga occupies an important place in traditional Russian and Siberian medicine, where it is considered a medicinal mushroom with many beneficial effects.
The main products into which chaga is processed are various types of teas, tinctures, capsules with its extract or powders. It is also used to make Siberian soaps and shampoos. Chaga is especially popular for its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Its extracts are also used in pharmacy and cosmetics. Thanks to the content of betulin and other biologically active substances, chaga has positive effects on the human body - it strengthens the immune system and improves metabolism. In Asia, this mushroom is also used in culinary applications, where its aromatic and slightly bitter broth enriches the flavours of various dishes. Because of its medicinal properties, it has been valued in traditional medicine for centuries and is now increasingly used in modern alternative medicine.
