Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Cocamidopropylamine Oxide, also known as N-[3-(Dimethylamino)Propyl] or CAO for short, is an organic compound used primarily in the cosmetic and chemical industries. This substance, which can be found on cosmetic product labels under the name cocoamidopropyl betaine, is a derivative of coconut oil. CAO has pleasant cleansing and foaming properties that make it particularly adept at helping rinse and cleanse away dirt and excess oil.
Due to its aforementioned properties, Cocamidopropylamine Oxide is included in many cosmetic and cleaning products. In particular, it is widely used in the manufacture of shampoos, body washes, bath foams and other skin and hair care products. It is also significantly used in household cleaning products as it is a great help in removing grease and dirt. Last but not least, CAO is also found in some toothpastes, as it helps to create foam and improve their cleaning effects.
