Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)
Chlorine is not commonly known by the name Bootlace tree, which belongs to the poisonous plant of the genus Antiaris. However, chlorine is one of the most important elements that has a key role in a wide range of products and processes. As an element, chlorine is indispensable for life, although free chlorine is dangerous and can cause burns. Its chemical reactivity makes it a useful oxidizing agent for many industrial processes.
One of the main uses of chlorine is in public health, specifically in the process of water disinfection. Chlorine is also an essential raw material in the chemical industry where it is used in the manufacture of many everyday products such as PVC, plastics, pharmaceuticals, disinfectants, paints, solvents and much more. Chlorine is also used in the bleaching of paper and textiles. Last but not least, it is used in the production of coolants, aerosols and antifreeze. This element thus has many forms and functional uses - from promoting hygienic conditions to manufacturing key components of modern technology. Even its potential hazards and negative environmental impacts do not diminish its indispensable role in human civilization.
