Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Cetyl Palmitate is a chemical substance that is also called cetyl palmitic acid cetyl ester, Hexadecanoic acid or Hexadecyl palmitate. It is an ester, specifically the palmitic ester of cetyl alcohol. It is a white crystalline substance with an oily surface that is insoluble in water. Cetyl palmitate belongs to the group of so-called fatty alcohols and fatty acids and is a substance that occurs naturally, for example in cosmetics, where it acts as an emulsifier and moisturizing agent, making the skin softer and more hydrated.
The use of cetyl palmitate is not limited to cosmetics, where it is widely used in many products such as creams, make-ups, body lotions or sunscreens. Cetyl palmitate is also used in the food industry as an E471 additive, which is permitted in the European Union. It is an emulsifier that ensures the mixing of two immiscible substances, such as oil and water. This makes the resulting food homogeneous and of a pleasant consistency. In addition, cetyl palmitate is used in the pharmaceutical industry, where it is involved in the production of medicines and other medicinal products.
