Cetyl Lactate
Other names: Hexadecyl 2-Hydroxypropanoate, Hexadecyl lactate, Lacticacid
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Cetyl Lactate, also known as Hexadecyl 2-Hydroxypropanoate, Hexadecyl lactate or Lacticacid, is a chemical compound used primarily in the cosmetic industry. This substance is, for example, a component of various creams, lotions, conditioners, shampoos, as well as make-up, lipsticks and other decorative cosmetic products. The reason why this fatty acid ester is used in cosmetics is because of its stability, emollient and moisturising properties, but also its ability to release active substances on the skin.
Cetyl Lactate is a certain intermediary in cosmetic formulations, which improves their texture and consistency and also allows them to be better "absorbed" into the skin, which is a desirable property in cosmetic products. As this substance also has mild keratolytic and exfoliating effects, it is also used in wrinkle-smoothing products, anti-wrinkle creams, masks and peels. It is also often used in deodorants and antiperspirants, where it serves as an emulsifier.
