Cetearyl alcohol is a mixture of two long-chain fatty alcohols, cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol, also known as cetylstearyl alcohol. This alcohol is one of the fatty alcohols that are quite common and important ingredients in cosmetic products. It is white and waxy and is obtained from vegetable and animal fats and oils, but can also be synthesized from petrochemical precursors.
Cetearyl alcohol is mainly used in the cosmetic industry as a thickener and stabilizer in emulsions. It can be found in a wide range of products such as body creams and lotions, shampoos and hair conditioners, lip balms, various face masks, make-up and various other skin and hair care products. In addition, cetearyl alcohol is used in medical products such as ointments and creams for eczema. Together with other ingredients, it can also form a protective film on the skin to prevent water loss from the skin. Its ability to improve consistency and increase absorption is also used in cosmetic products.
