Cedars (Cedrus atlantica/libani/deodara)

Other names: Atlas cedar, Lebanon cedar, Himalayan cedar

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Cedars, also known as Atlas cedar, Lebanon cedar and Himalayan cedar, are tree species belonging to the pine family. They are native to the eastern Mediterranean, southwest Asia and the Atlas Mountains. They are evergreen coniferous trees that are known for their majestic appearance. Cedars come in four basic species - Cedrus atlantica, Cedrus libani, Cedrus deodara and Cedrus brevifolia.

The Atlas cedar is characterized by its peculiar appearance - it has a pyramidal crown and branches growing horizontally from the tree. The Cedar of Lebanon is characterised by its broad, almost straight branches and large conical cones. The Himalayan cedar, on the other hand, has rather downward sloping branches and lower, broad crowns. Cedars are also prized for their wood, which is heavy, strong and durable. It is aromatic and has a characteristic amber-red colour.

In terms of utility, cedar wood is particularly popular in the joinery and furniture industries. Due to its exceptional properties, it is used for furniture, flooring, tiles, as well as musical instruments and boats. Thanks to its resistance to rot and pests, it is also used outdoors, for example for pergolas, terraces and wooden facades. Cedar of Lebanon is also known for its medicinal properties, its essential oil is used in aromatherapy. The Himalayan cedar has a strong scent that repels insects, which is why its wood is often used as a filler for wardrobes and chests of drawers.
