Carbomer
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Carbomer, also known by the names Carbethopendeciniumbromide or Septonex, is a specific type of polymer that is most commonly found in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Its properties of its polymers enrich many mixtures with stiffness, conesistency or viscosity, this makes it an indispensable component in many products. It is an insoluble powder that forms a thick jelly on contact with water, a very desirable property in the manufacture of creams, gels or shampoos.
Products containing carbomer are found not only in cosmetics but also in pharmaceuticals. It is present in many shampoos, washing gels, creams, toothpastes, contact lens cleaners, nail polish and mascara. Its neutralizing function causes the mixture to expand, resulting in a jelly-like structure. Carbomer is also used in the pharmaceutical industry to make eye gels, as well as in some oral medications. For example, in pharmacies it is found in dietary supplements for stool control. It is also used in antibacterial gels or as a thickener in syrups. In specific cases, it is even used as a treatment for burns, ulcers or inflammation of the mucous membranes. It is considered safe and is not generally considered to be a health hazard.
