Carapa guianensis (Carapa guinensis)
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Carapa guinensis (Carapa guinensis), also known by the names tribulus, tribulus, gokshura, bai ji li or green viagra, is a tree-shaped plant native to the Latin American tropics, particularly the region of Guyana. The wood of this tree is light brown in colour, resistant to termites and rot, and is therefore often used in joinery for furniture and shipbuilding.
The kernel of the fruit of the Karapa guayana is used to produce 'andirob oil', which has a strong anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect. This oil is often used in cosmetics to make creams for sensitive skin, hair masks for problematic hair or ointments for rheumatic problems. Due to its aphrodisiac properties, carapa guayana is also used in human diet, especially in Asia and South American countries, where it is a popular ingredient in various elixirs to promote male potency.
