Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Caprylic triglycerides, or caprylic/capric triglycerides, are ingredients that are widely used in the cosmetic industry, primarily because of their beneficial properties. It is a liquid mixture of esters that are derived from vegetable coconut oil and glycerin. Due to its wide range of applications and safety of use for all skin types, including sensitive and problematic skin, this ingredient is becoming increasingly popular.
Caprylic/capric triglycerides can be found in a wide range of products - from skin and hair care, to makeup, to sunscreens and body lotions. This is due to their emulsifying properties, which ensure that the product remains homogeneous and does not separate. It also acts as an occlusive ingredient that prevents water from evaporating from the skin, thus moisturising it and increasing its elasticity and firmness. They give the products a light and smooth texture and help to form a thin film during application, which protects the skin while giving it a soft and velvety appearance. Caprylic/capric triglycerides are also hypoallergenic, meaning they rarely cause allergic reactions or skin irritation.
