Capryl/Capramidopropyl Betaine
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Capryl/Capramidopropyl Betaine, also known as Calcium Stearate, Calcium di(octadecanoate) or E470, is a chemical compound widely used in the cosmetic industry. It is an amphoteric surfactant that is derived from coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine. Products that contain this ingredient are usually very well tolerated, allowing their use even for sensitive skin. This ingredient is popular for its foaming properties and emulsifying abilities - meaning it can help mix water and oil into a nice homogeneous cream or lotion.
Caprylic/Capramidopropyl Betaine is often used in the cosmetic industry as the main ingredient in shampoo products designed for sensitive skin. It is also a common ingredient in other cleansing products such as soaps, shower gels or bath foams. Due to its emulsifying properties, it is also often found in skin care products such as various creams and lotions. It can also be found in toothpastes, but also in some foods. As a food additive, E470 is used as a stabiliser, emulsifier or texture improver in various food products, such as bakery products. However, the use of this substance in food is regulated by law and its concentration must not exceed specified limits.
