Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Camphor, also known by the names Camphor tree, Ravintsara, Cinnamon camphor or Camphora, is a large evergreen tree native to East Asia. Camphor oil is extracted from these trees and is very popular in aromatherapy and natural healing. Although camphor has many useful properties, it is also necessary to be aware of its toxicity, which can be dangerous when used in excess. The camphor tree reaches heights of up to 30 meters and is characterized by its large leaves, which have a strong, penetrating and usually pleasant scent.
Camphor tree oil has many uses in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties make this oil suitable for treating pimples and acne. It is also often included in lip balms, soaps, creams and lotions. It has a cooling effect and is therefore often added to tanning or after-sun creams, where it acts as a soothing and cooling agent. In medicine, camphor oil is used, for example, in ointments for rheumatism or arthritis due to its analgesic properties. In aromatherapy, camphor essential oil is used for its stimulating and refreshing effects. Camphor is also an ingredient in some insect repellents and is used as a natural mothballs in some countries.
