Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Camellia japonica, also known as Tsubaki or Camellia japonica, belongs to the family Theaceae. It is a perennial plant that is native to East Asia, specifically Japan, Korea or China. Camellia japonica is a world-famous plant that is cultivated especially for its beautiful, richly blooming flowers. In natural conditions, it can grow up to 15 metres tall, but when grown in the Czech Republic, it usually does not exceed five metres in height. It is also a very popular shrub in our gardens, unpretentiously decorating our beds with its spectacular flowers in open and semi-shady habitats.
Extracts of Japanese camellia are used in many areas, especially in the cosmetic industry. Japanese camellia oil (Tsubaki oil) is a rich source of antioxidants and essential fatty acids that are beneficial for skin and hair health. Tsubaki oil can help improve skin hydration, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and promote overall skin elasticity and softness. Hair products containing Tsubaki oil can help strengthen hair and prevent hair loss, improve hair shine and promote hair growth. Japanese camellia is also used in gastronomy, and some varieties of camellia are grown specifically for making green and black tea. Its extracts are also used in alternative medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
