Other names: jackfruit, canoe, jacket
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The breadfruit tree, also known as jackfruit, canoe or jacquie, is a tree native to the Indian subcontinent where it is now widely cultivated. It is the largest tree fruit in the world, which can reach up to 36 kg in weight. Its yellow, aromatic fruits are popular in Southeast Asia, India and some other regions of the world. This nutritious fruit provides high levels of vitamin C and potassium and has become popular among vegetarians and vegans in recent years due to its texture that mimics meat.
The fruit of the breadfruit tree is used extensively in the culinary industry. The sweet yellow fruits are eaten fresh or made into various types of jams, fruit drinks or even crisps. Ripe jackfruit has a sweet taste that resembles a combination of pineapple, mango and banana and can be used to make desserts, cakes or smoothies. On the other hand, unripe jackfruit is used as a meat substitute in traditional Asian dishes such as Thai curries because it has a neutral flavour and can be well flavoured with various spice mixtures. It is also used to make preserves, jams or even vegan 'chicken' noodles. The seeds, when cooked or roasted, are used to make dishes similar in taste to roasted chestnuts. The tree itself is a woody plant whose wood is used in the construction of furniture, wooden instruments and musical instruments.
