Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Boswellic acid, also known as beta-bosewellic acid, keto-beta-boswellic acid or acetyl-keto-beta-boswellic acid, is a class of terpene compounds found in the resin of the Boswellia serrata tree and other species of the Boswellia genus. Boswellic acid is highly valued for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which are used especially in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, but also in modern medicine and pharmacy.
In the food and dietary supplement industry, boswellic acid is used for its health-promoting properties. It can be found in food supplements designed to support joint and musculoskeletal health, where it acts as a natural non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent. Boswellic acid is also used in cosmetics where it has regenerative and anti-inflammatory effects. Its effects are particularly prominent in products for problematic or mature skin with acne or wrinkles. It is also an important ingredient in aromatherapy, where its calming effect and specific scent are used. Modern research also suggests that boswellic acid and its derivatives could have potential in the treatment of cancer, atherosclerosis or Alzheimer's disease.
