Borneol

Other names: Borneo camphor, Borneo camphor, Bingpian

Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)

Borneol, also known as Borneo camphor, Borneo camphor or Bingpian, is an organic substance forming white to pale cream crystals with a characteristic volatile and pungent odour. It is mainly native to the island of Borneo and contributes significantly to many natural processes. It is a natural bicyclic monoterpene that can be found in some plant species, including pine trees, but is also synthetically produced. Borneol also has strong antioxidant properties and there are ongoing studies investigating its potential effects on cancer.

Borneol is used significantly in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine and aromatherapy, where its analgesic, anti-rheumatic and antiseptic effects are exploited. Furthermore, Borneol is also used as a component of many cosmetic products due to its ability to pass through the skin and thus improve the absorption of other active ingredients. Equally important is its use in the food and beverage industry where it is used as a flavouring agent. It is most commonly found in liqueurs and other alcoholic beverages. Borneol is also used in perfumery for the production of fragrances and is also used in the cleaning and disinfectant industry for its insect repellent properties.
