The pepper tree grows in humid, tropical climates and can reach heights of up to 4 metres. Its fruits, small spherical berries, are dried and ground into a spice that is invaluable in culinary applications.
Black pepper is one of the most commonly used spices in the world and is an essential part of many cuisines. Its pungent, slightly bitter and warm flavor adds depth and richness to any dish, from hot dishes to desserts and beverages. This spice is an important ingredient in many spice blends such as Indian garam masala, French quatre épices or English mixed spice. Last but not least, it is also used in the production of certain types of cheese, salami and other delicacies. Black pepper also provides the basis for the production of some perfumes and essential oils. Its pungent and stimulating properties are also used in medicine, for example, to treat digestive problems or headaches.
