Bidens pilosa, also known as Bidens pilosus, Black Jack or Spanish needles, is a plant with unusually interesting flower shapes and known for its medicinal properties. It is native to South America but has spread virtually worldwide. This plant is often confused with the downy dogwood, but its leaves have sharp hairs, while the hairs on the leaves of the double tooth are soft. The plant is 20 to 90 cm tall, has leathery stems and the flowers are white with a tiny yellow centre.
Because of its exceptional medicinal properties, the hairy toothwort is used in many products. It is mainly used in traditional medicine, where it is made into teas and decoctions that have a strong antioxidant effect and support the immune system. It is also used to treat various ailments such as infectious diseases, inflammation, diarrhea or skin problems. In the cosmetic industry, this plant is used for its anti-inflammatory and nourishing properties. It is thus included in many creams, masks and skin tonics. Toothwort has also been shown to be effective in treating a range of skin conditions including acne, eczema and psoriasis.
