Beta-ionone

Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)

Beta-ionone, which is also known as zinc pyrithione, is an organic compound that is widely used primarily in the cosmetics industry and the manufacture of hygiene products. This chemical is a glucoside derivative of 1,2-dithiol 3-thione and is characterized by strong antifungal and antibacterial properties that make it suitable for a wide range of applications.

Beta-ionone is commonly used, for example, in anti-dandruff shampoos, where it acts as a potent fungicide and kills the fungi and bacteria causing the unpleasant dandruff problem. This substance is also found in some types of soaps where it serves as a preservative and antibacterial ingredient. Outside of cosmetic products, beta-ionone is also found in some disinfectants and detergents. Due to its antimicrobial properties, it can also be found in some antiperspirants and deodorants. Last but not least, beta-ionone is also used in paints and coatings, where it acts as a biocide against moulds and fungi. Although this substance is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products, some studies suggest that it may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
