Benzoic acid (Acidum benzoicum)
Other names: Benzoic acid, E210
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Benzoic acid, also known as Acidum benzoicum or E210, is a white crystalline substance that is poorly soluble in water. It is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H5COOH, belonging to the carboxylic acid group. Its salts and esters are known as benzoates. Benzoic acid was first discovered in the 16th century in an extract from the resin of a tree called Styrax benzoin, hence its name. Today, however, it is mostly produced synthetically from toluene.
This acid is mainly used as a preservative in the food industry, where it is referred to as additive E210. It preserves, for example, drinks, jams and fruit products, salads and mayonnaise. It contributes to the protection of food against microbial spoilage and extends its shelf life. However, its application is not limited to the food industry. It is also used in the cosmetics industry, where it is contained in skin care products, shower gels, shampoos and mouthwashes. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry, where it is widely added to ointments and creams. In addition to these areas, it is also used in industry for the production of certain plastics and resins. Its myriad uses make it a very important substance in many fields.
