Baphia nitida

Other names: camwood, barwood, african sandalwood

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Baphia nitida, often referred to as camwood, barwood or african sandalwood, is a plant of the bean family that is native to West Africa. This tree or shrub, which can reach a height of up to 20 metres, is highly prized for its dye-rich wood, which is dark red or purple in colour. The wood of Baphia nitida is very hard and heavy and has a distinctive scent, which is reminiscent of Indian sandalwood and is therefore sometimes called African sandalwood.

Baphia nitida has a wide range of uses. Domestically in West Africa it is used by the local population as a body and hair dye, while it also has medicinal uses due to its antibacterial properties. Internationally, the wood of this plant is often used for furniture and flooring, due to its attractive appearance and durability. The wood powder is also used as a natural dye in the cosmetics industry, for example in soaps, creams and shampoos. Last but not least, camwood extract is also used in the production of perfumes for its distinctive scent.
