Aralia tall, also known as prodara slender, Aralia chinensis var. elata, Dimorphanthus elatus, Japanese angelica or ralia spinosa var. elata, is a plant native to East Asia, where it is widespread especially in Japan, Korea and Russia. It is a deciduous shrub or small tree growing up to ten metres in height. It is popular for its attractive appearance and its resistance to frost. Although this plant is suitable for our conditions, it is rather rarely seen in the Czech Republic.
As far as its use is concerned, the tall aralia is particularly important in horticulture and medicine. Few plants can boast such distinctive and striking leaves, which can be up to a metre long and form a striking feature in any garden. In medicine, this plant is used mainly in traditional Chinese medicine. An extract is obtained from the roots of the aralia, which is used to treat a number of diseases such as asthma, bronchitis and various skin problems. In Korean cuisine, the young stems are used as a vegetable and the roots are eaten as a delicacy. The shrub is also a source of nectar for bees, the inflorescence is rich in nectar and is thus an important food for pollinators. Because of its beauty, the tall aralia is also popular as an ornamental plant. However, it can be threatened by pests such as aphids or spore fungi.
