Aquilegia sibirica
Other names: Columbine, siberian columbine
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Aquilegia sibirica, also known by the names Columbine or Siberian columbine, is a species of plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. Native to the mountainous regions of Siberia and northwestern China, this beautiful periwinkle is prized for its bright blue, bell-shaped flowers at the top. It is relatively uncommon and grows in its natural habitat in mountain meadows or ravines.
Botanically, Aquilegia sibirica is considered a very interesting flower species, but it is also very useful to humans. Its flowers and young flowers can be used in decorative purposes, for example in arrangements or pots for outdoor decoration. Frost resistant, this plant is ideal for colder climates and as such is a popular choice for gardeners in more northern regions. However, despite its attractive appearance and usefulness in the horticultural industry, this species is not used in the food industry or medicine, which is the case with some other members of the Aquilegia genus. This is due to its high content of poisonous alkaloids that can be toxic to humans.
