Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Amber or Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate or Octyl methoxycinnamate, also known by the abbreviations OMC, Octyl methoxycinnamate or Octinoxate, is an organic compound that is often used as an ingredient in cosmetic products. It is an ester of para-methoxycinnamic acid that has the ability to absorb UV-B radiation from the sun. Its protective function prevents skin damage and reduces premature aging caused by the sun.
Amber plays an important role especially in the cosmetic industry. It is widely used in products such as sunscreens, lip balms, make-up, day creams and other products that have a UV protection factor. In addition to protecting the skin from the sun, amber also improves the stability of products and extends their shelf life. In some cases, it is also used in paints, plastics and other materials that are exposed to sunlight. However, its most common use remains in the cosmetics industry, where it provides important protection for the skin against harmful UV rays.
