Ailanthus altissima (Ailanthus altissima)

Other names: Chun gen pi, Ailanthus glandulosa

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Ailanthus altissima is a deciduous tree of the Simaroubaceae family, which is also known by the alternative names Chun gen pi, Ailanthus glandulosa or Ailanthus glandulosa. The species is native to China but can now be seen all over the world due to its invasive nature. This tree can reach heights of up to thirty metres and is widespread in areas with temperate to subtropical climates.

The uses of the Pajasan glandular are varied indeed. Its wood is often used in the furniture industry to make furniture or wooden decorations. Its hardness also makes it suitable for structural use, in the manufacture of floors, doors or windows. The tree is also used to a considerable extent in the pharmaceutical industry. Its leaves and bark are often used in traditional Chinese medicine, especially for their antibacterial and antiviral properties. The bark and leaves can also be processed into an aromatic press for poultices, inhalations and baths. Despite its wide range of uses, however, this species should be approached with some caution. In fact, the glandular spider plant is an invasive plant that threatens native plant communities in many areas of the world. Cultivation should be carried out with a view to protecting local ecosystems and biodiversity.
