Adipic Acid (Adipic Acid)
Other names: Acifloctin
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Adipic acid is a complex organic substance that belongs to dicarboxylic acids. It is also known as Acifloctin and its chemical formula is HOOC-(CH2)4-COOH. This acid occurs in two forms that are considered isomers: as cis-adipic acid and trans-adipic acid. The molecular shape of the acid is linear, with carboxyl groups located at both ends of the molecules. It is a white, odourless, crystalline substance that slowly absorbs moisture in the atmosphere.
Adipic acid is mainly used to produce nylon 6,6, which is a yarn made from a polymer based on this acid. This material has a wide range of applications in industry, from the manufacture of clothing and footwear to the automotive and electrical industries. In addition, this acid is also used to produce polyurethanes, which are mainly used to make foams for mattresses and furniture. Another use of this acid is in the production of soft PVC, which is used in the manufacture of various plastic products such as food packaging. Due to its properties, adipic acid is also used in the production of paints or as an acidity corrector in the food industry.
