Acrylate copolymers
Other names: Acrylates copolymers
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Acrylate copolymers (or Acrylates Copolymers) belong to a group of synthetic polymers that are widely used in various industries, mainly due to their unique properties. A polymer is a high molecular weight substance composed of repeats of one or more molecules called monomers. In acrylate copolymers, the monomers are acrylate compounds, which are derivatives of acrylic or methacrylic acid.
Acrylate copolymers are most commonly used in the cosmetic industry. The purpose of their use in cosmetics is to stabilize emulsions, control viscosity, form a film on the skin or hair, or provide UV protection. In cosmetics, acrylate copolymers can be found, for example, in mascaras, make-up, sunscreens or hairsprays. Other products to which acrylic copolymers are added include nail polish, foaming soaps, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, sunscreens and other cosmetic products. In addition to the cosmetics industry, acrylate copolymers are also used in the construction industry, where they are used as binders in coatings, and in the automotive industry, where they are used in the manufacture of car paints. In the food industry, acrylate copolymers are used as food additives.
